NRP FAQ’s

New Runners’ Program
Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do this?
Yes, you can! This program is designed to help you prepare to run or run / walk a 5K. All fitness levels are welcome. The majority of our past participants had never run before this program.

We will start off the first week with mostly walking and some running intervals. Each week, the walking intervals will get shorter and the running intervals will get longer. This will allow you to build up your stamina and speed. Coaches will be with you each step of the way. And other participants will be there to cheer you along.

If you can walk comfortably for 20 minutes right now, and if you are willing to follow the scheduled program, then this program is for you! If you have the desire to become more active, meet new friends with healthy lifestyles and perhaps become a runner, then this program is for you!

(Please see your health care provider before starting any new exercise or fitness regimen.)

I’ve run a little in the past…..I used to run a long time ago…..I’ve never run before…..is this program for me?
Yes! We break the participants up into groups so that everyone can work at their own speed. The program is the same for each participant, but the speeds might be different. We will work with each participant to make sure that they are progressing.  (If you can comfortably run 3 miles right now, just come out to a group run!)

How do I register?
Download the registration form. Read it completely. Fill it out and sign it. Send it to us via the mail. Or you can scan and email it to the address on the front.

How do I pay?
Payment information is on the front of the registration form. You can send us a check or you can pay by debit or credit card through PayPal. (Note our very affordable program fee. Comparable programs in the area can cost $85 or more!)

I really want to do this. How do I make sure I have a spot?
Two words – REGISTER EARLY! This program fills up fast. The fastest way to register? Complete the form, scan it in and email it. Then have us send you a PayPal invoice. Once we have both your payment and your registration, you are good to go. Otherwise, just complete the form, write us a check and send it in soon. Registration closes on February 11th.

I sent in my registration form; what now?
Once we receive your registration form AND your payment, we will send you an email confirmation outlining program details and next steps. If you do not receive an email confirmation within 5 business days of sending in your information, please contact us via the email address below.

Be sure to read the confirmation email in its entirety as it contains a LOT of important information, as well as some hints on what you can do to be successful with the program.

Speaking of which, how CAN I prepare for and ensure my success in the program?

The best way to prepare is to start walking….now! Plan to walk for at least 10 minutes a day, three times per week, building up to walking 20-25 minutes per day, three to four times per week. This is not mandatory but will go a long ways towards your ability to start the formal section of the program off with relative ease. You can even join the MRC at our group runs on Mondays, Wednesdays or Saturdays! Introduce yourself as a New Runner to one of our ‘Ambassadors’ and they will point out some route options for you! It is also advisable to contact your health care provider to let them know that you are starting a new fitness program.
To ensure your success? Follow the program. Read the emails and follow the format given for group and independent workouts. Attend most, if not all, scheduled sessions. Walk when the coaches tell you to walk. Run when they tell you to run. Many prior participants have also found it helpful to befriend people in their pace group and meet for walk / runs outside of the program. Ask questions when you have them. Let the coaches know if you need assistance, individual attention, encouragement or advice. That’s what they are there for!

What should I wear?
Fitted, synthetic clothing and socks (“wicking”) are the best for running. Try to minimize cotton fabrics, because when you sweat, the cotton traps the moisture leaving you feeling wet and cold. Target, Walmart, Bull City Running (Durham), Off N Running Sports (Greensboro) and Fleet Feet (Carrboro) carry a great selection of wicking clothing. (Mention the MRC at Omega, Bull City or Off N Running and you should receive a 10% discount). Look for words like “moisture-resistant” or “Duo-dry” on the tags. The first few weeks will be pretty cold, so be sure to wear a hat and gloves. The best guide is to dress as though it will be 20 degrees warmer out than the actual temperature (to accommodate for your body temperature as you walk/run and warm up).

For the first few weeks, it will be very dark out on our Tuesday runs—please be sure to either provide your own reflective gear/light. Or you can shop the MRC Store (look above for the link) for DEEPLY DISCOUNTED reflective gear through February 7th!!!

Running shoes should be selected based on your foot shape (high arches, feet roll inwards as you run, etc) and running style; Omega Sports (Durham or Burlington), Bull City Running, Off N Running and Fleet Feet have staff that can help you select the right shoe for you. This really is important!  You will notice a tremendous difference in a “regular” shoe vs. a running shoe designed for your foot type.

Visit the MRC Resources page for information about all of these topics and contact information for these stores.

What should I bring to the first session?
A cell phone, identification, reflective gear, and water, as well as an open mind and a smile. Please leave ipods, headphones and other noise blocking devices at home. You want to hear the coaches, your new friends and the surrounding cars.

Where is the first session?
For security reasons, we send that information out to our registered participants. We’ll send you a confirmation email with all of the details. The meeting location is in downtown Mebane.

What happens after I complete the program?
The Running Club typically meets on Monday, Wednesdays, and Saturdays for group runs and often travels together to races. We have a variety of speeds regularly running from a 7:00/mile pace up to a 13:00/mile pace. We are a friendly, social bunch, and we look forward to seeing you at our regular runs and social events!

I have questions that are not on this list. Who do I ask?
